Word and Worship Wednesday - Psalm 46 - Who is she?

Welcome to another Word & Worship Wednesday here at Ivytree Studio.

This week I shared the Meaningful Monday Scripture Prompt: Psalm 46:6. I wanted to share with you a little more about this verse, because I think that most Bible Journalers look at this superficially. This is not about you or me. This is about God and the City of Jerusalem.

Psalm 46:5 — Gracelilly Lexicon Study

“God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.”
— Psalm 46:5 (WEB)

Step 1 — Understanding the Context Correctly

Psalm 46 is a Psalm of confidence in God during chaos, instability, fear, and trouble. This is very encouraging. The Psalm repeatedly points to God as:

  • refuge

  • strength

  • protector

  • present help

This Psalm is not primarily about an individual woman. That is important to understand correctly.

Looking at the Verses Around Psalm 46:5

Psalm 46:4

“There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tents of the Most High.”

Psalm 46:5

“God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.”

Psalm 46:6

“The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted His voice and the earth melted.”

Who Is “Her”?

The “her” in Psalm 46:5 refers to:

“The city of God”

mentioned in verse 4.

In the immediate context:

  • the city represents Jerusalem/Zion

  • the dwelling place of God

  • God’s covenant people

  • His protected presence among His people

So the verse is not originally speaking about:

  • feminine empowerment

  • an individual woman

  • self-confidence

It is about:

God’s sustaining presence among His covenant people.

How Can Christians Apply This Today?

While the original context refers to the city of God, believers today can still draw spiritual encouragement from the principle revealed here:

Where God dwells,
there is stability,
help,
security,
and sustaining grace. I love this so much!

For Creative Christian Women, this verse becomes a reminder that:

  • God’s presence steadies us

  • we do not stand in our own strength

  • emotional storms do not remove God’s nearness

  • God remains present during overwhelming seasons, and I want to add that the city-concept, meaning the People of God, the Bride of Christ, that is us, means to me that we are under this covering, included, fully protected.

The strength is not in “her.”
The strength is in God within her.

That changes the entire interpretation.

Lexicon Study — Psalm 46:5

1. “God”

Hebrew:

Elohim (אֱלֹהִים)
Strong’s H430

Meaning:

  • God

  • Supreme ruler

  • Mighty One

  • Creator

  • Sovereign authority

In this Psalm, Elohim emphasizes:

  • God’s power over chaos

  • His rule over nations

  • His ability to protect and sustain

2. “Within”

Hebrew:

Qereb (קֶרֶב)
Strong’s H7130

Meaning:

  • midst

  • inner part

  • center

  • among

  • inward presence

This word reveals intimacy and nearness.

God is not distant from His people.
He is:

  • among them

  • in their midst

  • actively present

This is one of the most comforting truths in the Psalm.

3. “Fall / Be Moved”

Hebrew:

Mot (מוֹט)
Strong’s H4131

Meaning:

  • shaken

  • toppled

  • slip

  • collapse

  • be moved

The picture is not that life will never feel difficult.

The meaning is:

  • she will not collapse

  • she will not ultimately be destroyed

  • she will not be removed from God’s sustaining care

The stability comes from God’s presence.

Key Lessons

  • God’s presence is our true security.

  • Stability is found in Him, not circumstances.

  • God remains near during chaos and uncertainty.

  • Emotional overwhelm does not mean abandonment.

  • The Lord sustains His people through difficult seasons.

  • We are strengthened by His presence, not our own ability.

Personal Application

  • Where have I been trying to stand in my own strength?

  • What fears or emotional storms are currently shaking me?

  • Am I anchoring myself in God’s presence daily?

  • How can I become more aware of His nearness during stressful seasons?

Practical Application:

  • Begin each morning with quiet prayer before entering the noise of the day.

  • Read Psalm 46 slowly and prayerfully.

  • Journal moments where you have seen God sustain you before.

  • Replace panic with worship and prayer.

  • Create rhythms that help you remain spiritually grounded.

Gracelilly Devotional

“God Is Within Her”

There are seasons where life feels loud, uncertain, and emotionally exhausting. As Highly Sensitive women, we can sometimes feel deeply shaken by the pressures around us. The world moves fast. Fear rises easily. Disappointment weighs heavily. I can relate to this a lot.

Yet Psalm 46 gently reminds us where true stability is found.

Not in perfect circumstances.
Not in emotional strength.
Not in having all the answers.

But in God’s presence.

The “her” in Psalm 46:5 originally referred to the city of God — the place where His presence dwelt among His people. The promise was not that trouble would never come. In fact, the surrounding verses describe nations raging and kingdoms shaking.

Yet in the middle of the chaos:
God was still there. This is so powerful to me today. I needed to hear this again.

That same truth comforts me and I hope it will comfort you too.

Let's remember:

When anxiety rises…
When plans change…
When life feels uncertain…
God remains in the midst of His people.

His presence steadies what fear tries to shake. I see myself right now inside of that City of God, covered by God Himself. What an awesome vision.

As Creative Christian Women, we do not need to carry life entirely in our own strength. We are invited to rest in the sustaining presence of the Lord who holds us secure even in unstable seasons.

God within us changes everything.

Gracelilly Prayer

Lord, thank You that Your presence is my true place of security and peace. When life feels overwhelming and my heart feels shaken, remind me that You are still near. Help me stop striving in my own strength and teach me to rest in Your sustaining grace.

Steady my heart during uncertain seasons. Quiet my anxious thoughts and help me remain rooted in Your Word. Thank You that I do not walk through difficult days alone. You are with me, within me, and faithfully holding me together even when life feels unstable.

Help me become more aware of Your presence daily and teach me to trust You more deeply.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
